Welcome to exsgi.org!
What is exsgi.org?
After creating the email alias for bad-attitude.org, it became clear that we needed a place for people to communicate in a more... well... friendly manner. :)

exsgi.org hosts an email alias for people who used to work at Silicon Graphics, with the goal of providing a place for to keep in touch with each other.

I would be happy to create a more interesting site, where perhaps we could collect stories, images, etc. that remind us of the good days at SGI. If anyone has any ideas, or would like to help, please let me know!

What is the goal of exsgi@exsgi.org?
I kind of think of exsgi@exsgi.org as an external version of the sgi.general newsgroup. The intention is simply to provide a place where people who worked for SGI can talk to each other.

Anything from "do you know where so-and-so is?" to "I have great job openings for...." to "Anyone know of a good Honda repair place in Sunnyvale?" to to information about what SGI is doing, to ... well - whatever you want to talk about is welcome on this list.

Who can join the mailing list?
Only people that have worked for SGI can join.
How do I subscribe?
  1. Send email to ; no subject line is required.
In the body of the email, please include include any information that will help me identify you as a former SGI employee. For example - who invited you to join the email list, what projects you worked on at SGI, who you worked for, what division you were in, internal codenames that weren't publicized (odyssey doesn't count :), who else you worked with, etc etc etc... If I don't recognize your name and you don't provide any information, you will not added to the email alias.
  2. You will receive an email back asking you to confirm that you want to subscribe. Just reply to the email.
  3. An email is sent to the list moderators with your request to join.
  4. Once a moderator approves your request, you will get a message confirming that you have been added to the alias.

Who can post to the list?
Only people subscribed to the list can send emails to it.
How do I unsubscribe from the list?
  1. Send email to ; no subject or body is required.
  2. You will receive an email back asking you to confirm that you want to unsubscribe. Just reply to the email and you will be removed from the mail alias.

How do I change the email address I'm subscribed under?
Simply unsubscribe with the old email address, and the subscribe again with your new email address.
What if I don't want to receive so many emails?
If you do not wish to receive emails real time as they are sent to the list, you can subscribe "via digest".

With digests, instead of getting emails real time as they are sent, the emails are collected and all sent out together. One digest email is sent when any of the following criteria have been met since the last digest was sent:

  • 30+ email messages have been sent to the list
  • a total of 64k or more of mail have been sent to the list
  • 48 hours have past since the last digest was sent
  • To subscribe via digest to the exsgi list, follow the above instructions with the exception that email should be sent to .

If you are currently a subscriber to the regular exsgi@exsgi.org list and would like to change to be a digest subscriber, please send email to the following addresses:

  • Same subscription process applies as above.
What software is used to run the email list?
The list is run using a program called ezmlm. Ezmlm is a mail list administrative package which runs with qmail, the mailer that my ISP uses. It's similar to majordomo, but uses different commands.
How was the list set up?
I set up this email list with the following features:
  • The subscriber list is moderated. In order to join the list, a person must be added by a moderator. See notes above on how to join the list.
  • Messages to the list are not moderated, but you must be subscribed to the list to successfully send email to it (to help avoid spamming.)
  • The text " [exsgi] " prepends each subject line; this should allow you to filter the messages if you choose to do so.
  • The list is set up to accomodate digests - see above for further information.

  • Can we create new lists?
Yes, if the lists are SGI-related or applicable to SGI folk. I would like to avoid more general lists, but if you would like to start a list for a specific purpose, such as maybe finance@exsgi.com, send an email to .
Whom do I contact if I have questions about the list?
All emails should be addressed to .
What do I do if I need to rant and rave about SGI???
